What is a 'thin' order book and why is it dangerous?

A thin order book has very little volume near the current price, meaning even a small market order can move the price several percent. Common in low-cap altcoins, new listings, and off-peak hours. The danger is that your fill price will be far worse than the displayed price.

Should I use market orders or limit orders?

For liquid pairs (BTC/USDT, ETH/USDT) and small sizes, market orders are fine. For everything else — altcoins, larger sizes, anything where 0.5% matters — use limit orders. The fee discount alone usually justifies it.

What's the difference between maker and taker fees?

A maker adds liquidity by placing a limit order that doesn't immediately execute. A taker removes liquidity by placing an order that fills against an existing one. Most exchanges give makers a discount (often 0.00–0.10%) versus takers (0.05–0.20%) to incentivize deeper books.

Can the exchange see my stop-loss orders?

On a CEX, yes — the exchange knows where every conditional order is. On a DEX, conditional orders typically don't exist at the protocol level (they're simulated by the front-end or off-chain bots). Either way, very obvious round-number stops can be hunted by other traders.

Why do prices differ across exchanges?

Each exchange has its own order book. Differences usually stay within 0.1–0.5% because arbitrage bots eliminate larger gaps in seconds. Bigger gaps appear in stressed markets or for assets with limited cross-exchange transfer (e.g. coins paused for deposits).

How do DEX order books work without a matching engine?

Most DEXs use AMMs — liquidity pools where prices are determined by a formula (typically x*y=k) rather than matched orders. There is no order book. A few hybrid DEXs (dYdX, Hyperliquid) run actual on-chain or off-chain order books for derivatives.
