About Pi Network
Pi Network (PI) is a cryptocurrency project founded in 2019 by a group of Stanford alumni, designed around the idea that anyone with a smartphone should be able to participate in securing and earning a digital currency. During its 'enclosed mainnet' phase, Pi accumulated tens of millions of registered users called 'Pioneers' through a daily mining app. Pi launched its open mainnet in February 2025, allowing on-chain transfers between mainnet wallets and external integrations.
Pi Network's blockchain is based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), a federated Byzantine agreement protocol that does not rely on energy-intensive proof-of-work. Validators (Nodes) are run by community participants, with consensus weight derived from a network of trust relationships between Pioneers. Mainnet PI is gradually unlocked for KYC-verified users according to lockup choices and migration eligibility set by the protocol.
Pi's ecosystem is centred on the Pi Browser, the in-app Pi Wallet, and a developer platform for community-built apps. The Pi Core Team coordinates protocol development, the KYC programme, and ecosystem partnerships, while Pioneers contribute through validation, app building, and merchant adoption. After open mainnet, PI began appearing on a number of centralized exchanges, expanding its visibility and tradability.
