About PayPal USD
PayPal USD (PYUSD) is a US-dollar-pegged stablecoin launched in August 2023 by PayPal in partnership with Paxos Trust Company, which acts as the regulated issuer. PYUSD is intended to be redeemable one-to-one for US dollars and to serve as a bridge between PayPal's payments network and the broader crypto ecosystem, allowing PayPal and Venmo customers to send, receive, and settle in dollars on-chain.
PYUSD is fully backed by US dollar deposits, short-term US Treasury bills, and cash equivalents held by Paxos. Paxos publishes monthly reserve reports and third-party attestations of the backing assets. The token is issued natively on Ethereum and Solana, with cross-chain availability supported by official integrations. As a regulated New York Trust company, Paxos operates PYUSD under direct supervision by the New York Department of Financial Services.
PYUSD is integrated directly into PayPal and Venmo for consumer payments and can be sent to compatible external wallets. On-chain, PYUSD is supported across major centralized exchanges, DEXs (Uniswap, Curve), and lending protocols, and is used for cross-border transfers, on-chain payments, and DeFi yield strategies. PayPal positions PYUSD as a key piece of its long-term strategy for stablecoin-powered commerce.
