About Dogecoin
Dogecoin (DOGE) is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency launched in December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a friendly, meme-inspired alternative to Bitcoin. Built on a fork of the Litecoin codebase, Dogecoin uses Scrypt-based proof-of-work mining and has consistently been one of the most recognisable consumer-facing cryptocurrencies, popular for tipping, micro-payments, and charitable campaigns.
Dogecoin produces a new block roughly every minute and pays a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE per block, giving the network an unbounded but predictable annual issuance of about 5 billion new DOGE. Since 2014, Dogecoin has been merge-mined with Litecoin, allowing Litecoin miners to secure both networks simultaneously. Transaction fees are very low, which has made DOGE practical for small everyday transfers.
The Dogecoin ecosystem is anchored by an active grassroots community and the non-profit Dogecoin Foundation, which coordinates open-source development, trademarks, and outreach. DOGE is supported by major exchanges and wallets, accepted by a growing list of merchants and payment processors including Tesla and the Dallas Mavericks, and integrated into payment platforms via providers such as BitPay and NOWPayments.
