About Canton
Canton (CC) is the native asset of the Canton Network, a public-permissioned blockchain ecosystem developed by Digital Asset and a consortium of major financial institutions. Canton is built around the Daml smart-contract language and is designed for capital-markets use cases — tokenized assets, repo, collateral mobility, and post-trade workflows — where participants need on-chain interoperability while preserving counterparty-level data privacy and regulatory controls.
The Canton Network is composed of independently-operated synchronisation domains and applications that interoperate through the Canton protocol. Unlike a single shared ledger, each application keeps its own data private to authorised participants, while atomic cross-application transactions allow assets and obligations to move between them. CC is used for fees, validator incentives, and governance across the network's super-validators.
Canton's ecosystem includes major banks, asset managers, exchanges, and infrastructure providers running production tokenized-asset, repo, and collateral applications, as well as live tokenized money-market fund deployments. Daml development tooling, standardised templates for financial instruments, and multi-party workflow primitives form the backbone of how applications integrate with the network.
